Mugaga
Kenya, Nyeri
This is the first Kenyan coffee intoruced by our import partners at Kamba Coffee, after dealing with Brazilian and Ethiopian coffees for several years.
Brothers Paras and Sanheev Shah who have been sourcing Kenyan coffee for over 30 years from local cooperatives have partnered with the local estates to develop a government school for up to 60 children of the local farmers, refurbing and equipping the building has met with a lot of support from local sponsors.
Mugaga Farmers is the cooperative this coffee was grown by, with about 3500 smallholders contributing their crops and about 1500 hectares of land across the central Nyeri Disctict, they produce around 565 tonnes of cherries per year. The coffee is grown between 1600-2050masl, goes through a traditional washed process through Kiambara mill using water from streams flowing from Mt. Kenya and Aberdares.
It's a very classic and classy Kenya, just two botanical varieties instead being a mix of 3-4 which is much often the case, it's light and crispy, with notes of blackcurrants, rhubarb and custard drops, citrus and black tea with honey, it's a throwback to 2015-2018 Kenyan coffees from a simpler time.
